Rabun Williams receives #ThumbsUpWithSam Communty Service Award

June 21, 2022- Monroeville, AL  At the close of the 2022 Farm to Table Fundraiser, Monroeville Main Street Executive Director Anne Marie Bryan presented the First Annual #ThumbsUpWithSam Community Service Award to Rabun Williams. Rabun’s love and dedication is evident in his tireless volunteer service to Monroeville and its organizations including the Monroe County Museum, Monroe County Library, and the Chamber of Commerce and all three had lots of wonderful things to say about him.

“Rabun is one of the most remarkable people I have ever known. He is so knowledgeable about the history of Monroeville and Monroe County. He is so willing to give his time to the museum to help us in any way that he can. We are truly blessed to have him helping us on a regular basis sharing his knowledge with our visitors.”

Wanda Green, Executive Director

Monroe County Museum

“On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, we appreciate Rabun Williams’ dedication to the Monroe County Museum and Monroeville. Rabun is always willing to meet with our travel writers, tour groups and special guests. He gives insightful and interesting tours of both the museum and our historic downtown. He has personally taught me so much about the history of our beloved town.”

Penelope Hines, Executive Director

Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce

“You could never tell the whole story of Monroeville without including Rabun. The library team has been honored over the years to have Rabun visit quite often. To say he is a fan of books is an understatement. The library is often a stopping place during his morning walks and most Thursday evenings you can find him keeping our staff company when we stay open a little later than usual. His quiet presence is comforting. No one is left alone. And we treasure the time he spends with us. Certainly, the literary capital is a brighter place for having Rabun as a local. And the library is proud to be among those who are a part of his story.   Thank you, Rabun for all you do for us all.”

Angie Snyder, Library Director

Monroe County Public Library

The award honors the memory of long-time Monroeville Main Street board member Sam Schjott who's dedication to community service was ledgendary far beyond the border of Monroe County!  A native of Bayou la Batre, a graduate of Huntingdon College and the University of Florida, Sam was so MANY things in his too brief life: an ardent community servant, a lover of all things Mardi Gras, and a devoted friend! In addition to Monroeville Main Street, Sam served on numerous Monroe County boards including United Way, Kiwanis, Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce, & M/MC EDA, just to name a few.
