Monroeville Downtown Historic District
In September 2009, the Monroeville Downtown Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and role in Alabama history.
In 2021, the 1903 Monroe County Courthouse, the centerpiece of downtown, was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This honor was awarded in recognition of its association with Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird and the iconic 1962 film adaptation.
Preserving the character and cultural heritage of our downtown is at the core of every revitalization effort we support.
