The Monroe County Public Library and the Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum at Coastal Alabama Community College will host Kathryn Tucker Windham Day on October 12 from 10 a.m. until noon at the library, located at 121 Pineville Road. The free event is designed for students in third through sixth grades who are out of school for the Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' holiday.

Participants will learn about the life and legacy of acclaimed Alabama author, journalist, and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham and explore her beloved classic, 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey. Guests will hear selected stories from the book, discover how Windham collected and preserved Alabama folklore, create a themed craft, and enjoy free snacks.

The event brings the Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum at Coastal Alabama Community College directly to Monroe County, allowing young readers to experience the museum's educational programming in their hometown.

"Kathryn Tucker Windham introduced generations of readers to Alabama's rich storytelling traditions through 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey," Alisha Bowen, Director of the Coastal Alabama Museums said. "We're excited to bring the museum to town and share those stories in a not-too-scary manner with a new generation of young readers."

The craft activity is sponsored by Monroeville Main Street with the Monroe County Public Library, and all activities, materials, and refreshments will be provided free of charge.  

Families with children in grades 3-6 are encouraged to attend this fun and educational program celebrating one of Alabama's most treasured storytellers.  

As October 12 is a public holiday, the Monroe County Public Library will only be open for attendees of this event. The library will not be open for general services on this day.
